Improve IVF Success Rates With Successful IVF

Research Links Stress and IVF Success Rates

by Ben Clinch

In 2009, a Denmark Research team at the University of Aarhus studied the outcome of IVF treatment on 809 women with an average age of 31. What they found linked women who reported less negative life events prior to IVF treatment commencing with greater pregnancy rates than those who reported more negative life events.

The researchers had identified that there are more studies looking into the stress associated with IVF treatment than stress in the 12 months prior to treatment. While they were not discounting the stress often associated with IVF, they recognised that further study was needed to general stress leading up to IVF treatment.

The team used standard statistical approaches including questionnaires on Recent Events, perceived stress and depressive symptoms. Logistic regression analyses revealed that the number of negative life- events remained a significant predictor of pregnancy.

The research team concluded:

A large number of life-events perceived as having a negative impact on quality of life may indicate chronic stress, and the results of our study indicate that stress may reduce the chances of a successful outcome following IVF, possibly through psychobiological mechanisms affecting medical end-points such as oocyte retrieval outcome.”

This supports clinical and anecdotal findings that stress can impede natural reproductive processes which forms the basis of Diana Tibble’s parenting titles “Natural Conception” and “Successful IVF” both of which work on reducing stress levels at the cause (the mind’s perception of ‘stressful’ events).

The research team has made the summary of their findings available at Stressful life events are associated with a poor in-vitro fertilization (IVF) outcome: a prospective study.
